5. Interpretive framework

This section identifies and describes the areas of activity and expertise where you and your staff must excel to deliver interpretation that involves, engages, inspires and empowers your visitors.

Each site and organization has its own priorities. However, we generally identify ten areas of core competency:

  • Heritage Interpretation
  • School Programming
  • Visitor Information/Orientation to ensure that visitors can easily and safely navigate your site
  • Ongoing Research about your site and visitors
  • Assisting Site Managers to manage visitor impacts on site features and resources
  • Stewardship Involvement to engage visitors in meaningful activities related to the care of your site
  • Collaboration and Partnership to extend the scope and depth of visitor experiences
  • Tourism
  • Marketing
  • Recreation Programming—encouraging and enabling appropriate recreation activities at your site

Note that most organizations and agencies have their own terminology for this part of the planning process. For example, Rouge Park uses Core Competencies. Alberta Parks uses “Program Statement” and Prince Albert National Park use “Tactics.”

How core competencies are applied
