4. Interpretive Situation

This section provides clear guiding principles for selecting and delivering interpretive programs at your site.

Interpretive mission statement

This includes:

  • purpose (why the suite of programs exists and what it seeks to accomplish)
  • business (the main methods will be used)
  • values (principles and beliefs that guide your choice of programs)

Vision statement for interpretation

This describes what success will look like.

Goals and objectives

Think of goals as the treasure at the top of the stairs and the objectives as the individual stairs you climb to reach it.

Storylines

These are the main take-away ideas and impressions that you want interpretive program participants to leave with. They must reflect your site and agency’s mandates.

Storylines (often called themes) are main ideas. They are most often expressed in a sentence or short paragraph.

Substories (often called subthemes) elaborate and expand the ideas stated in the storyline. An example related to the sample above is:
